Rugby and football are both believed to have come from the Greek game harpaston. But football as a sport know is believed to have originated in the 12th century England, however it wasn't recognised as a sport until the 1800s when it began to gain rules. On the 26th of October 1863, 11 clubs and schools from London gathered together at Freemasons Tavern to discuss the rules that were to be set down for this game which were acceptable to everyone (the rugby and football schools). This meeting became the start of the Football Association.
On December 8th 1863 the two sports rugby and football split after about half a century of disputes on whether are not the ball can be carried or not etc.
